Book Review
This bestseller hit all the traditional high fantasy tropes: royal orphan hero, spooky sorceress villain, criminal yet dashing love interest, et cetera. Some of these tropes were executed poorly (I am SO BORED of heroines falling in love with terse-voiced kidnappers within the first two chapters). Some were interesting but uneven (apparently this fantasy kingdom is a post-American utopia, which is sometimes cool and sometimes weirdly over-described). All that aside, the plot was reasonably captivating and I will probably pick up book 2.
